Plant the Right Tree in the Right Place

To assure safe and reliable electric service for you and your neighbors, OG&E recommends planting trees well clear of power lines. This includes both overhead and underground lines. If you choose to plant in the vicinity of overhead power lines, please plant trees with a mature height that will not interfere with power lines according to the planning guide below.

Tree Planting Instructions

Shrubs or small trees with a mature height of one to 15 feet should be planted at least 15 feet away from electric lines. Small trees with a mature height of 15-28 feet should be planted at least 20 feet away from electric lines. Trees with a mature height of 28 to 35 feet should be planted at least 25 feet away from power lines. Avoid planting large trees with a mature height of 35 to 70 feet within 50 feet of power lines.

The links on this page to the Arbor Day Foundation and Oklahoma City's planting guide for Central Oklahoma feature information that will assist you in selecting the right tree for your yard or landscape. In addition to helping you choose the right tree for the Oklahoma climate, they also provide important species-specific information about height at maturity. This information, when used in conjunction with the Planning Guide, will help you properly plan your tree planting to avoid interference with electric lines as your tree matures.

Safety First

To insure your safety, before planting trees or digging in an area with underground utilities, we encourage you to have utilities properly located and marked. Before you dig – Call OKIE at 1-800-522-OKIE or submit your request on-line at http://www.callokie.com/.
