 What is a KWH?

Get to Know kWh

When you’re sitting down to pay the bills, it’s important to understand the details of your home energy use. The answers as presented in the bill all revolve around the kilowatt-hour (kWh).

An appliance’s wattage is the amount of power it consumes per hour of use. To figure out how much energy it uses per day, follow the steps below:

  • Multiply its wattage (listed on nameplate) by the number of hours per day it’s operating.

  • Divide that number by 1,000.

  • Estimate your monthly usage by multiplying that number by 30 (days).

  • Multiply the monthly kWh usage by the rate you pay to determine that item’s monthly cost.

Example

A 100-watt light bulb that runs 10 hours/day equals 1,000 watts/day. Divide that by 1,000 and get 1-kWh/day. Multiply 1 by 30 days for 30-kWh. That times 8.00¢ (the average cost per kWh for residential customers) equals about $2.40/month.
