Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. (OG&E), in collaboration with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) and the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Foundation (OWCF), recently hosted a free, educational fishing clinic for Harrah students at its Horseshoe Lake Power Plant.
"Seeing the smiles on the children's faces as they interacted with their sports heroes was truly heartwarming," said Kara Givens, OG&E community outreach coordinator. "This event not only provided a fun and engaging environment that the students will never forget, but it also got the children outside to enjoy nature and offered some valuable learning opportunities."
This year’s clinic, held April 11, welcomed students from Harrah’s middle and elementary schools and featured special guests: University of Oklahoma football players Eddy Pierre-Louis and Sammy Omosigho. The players joined OG&E volunteers and ODWC officials in guiding the children through fishing basics while encouraging outdoor engagement and community involvement.
“We were absolutely thrilled with the fishing clinic,” said Mike McAfee, Russell Babb Elementary Principal. “The OU football players added a magical touch that made the day even more special for our kids. Our heartfelt thanks to OG&E for inviting us to be a part of such a memorable experience."
The event supports the ODWC’s Aquatic Resources Education Program, which provides underserved youth with opportunities to connect with Oklahoma’s aquatic ecosystems. Children learned how to fish, gained insight into local wildlife habitats, and explored simple ways to conserve natural resources like lakes, rivers, and streams.
"Our employees love to work with students at the fishing clinic at our Horseshoe Power Plant ,” said Shawn Gribble, director of OG&E’s Horseshoe Lake Power Plant. “Every day we make sure our power plants are providing reliable electric service to homes and businesses, and hosting fishing clinics at the power plant is another great way to serve our communities.”
Each student received a complimentary fishing pole to take home, and many caught fish during the day-long clinic. OG&E employees and wildlife experts also shared conservation tips and encouraged the children to become active stewards of Oklahoma’s natural resources.
The fishing clinic is just one example of how OG&E works to protect and preserve the environment in the communities it serves. Through strategic partnerships and outreach efforts like this one, OG&E remains committed to supporting environmental stewardship and biodiversity across the state.
